Ola Kolehmainen

I happened to come across Ola Kolehmainen by accident one day in the library, the bareness of the semi abstract structures jumped out at me. I love his use of multiplies or repeated pattern, strong geometric lines and the notion of 3D structures becoming flat surfaces. I thought that his aesthetic qualities would lend themselves well to Dublin Docklands.

While I was taking photos I began to notice the remnants of old buildings, some still in use, standing proudly beside the monstrous glass structures. I found the contrast startling as it brought to mind the property bubble of the last decade. The vast office blocks illustrating the potential gain to be achieved from commercial development. The clean lines highlighting the architectural visions of the twentieth century. As you stand there you get the sense you could be anyone anywhere.

The American artist Robin Smithson once spoke about emerging into ruin rather than falling into ruins. Could we apply this to us? Our ghost estates perhaps......
